Xiao Shan Dong

A third-generation mainlander family kitchen in Hengchun. The crispy duck has been passed down by word of mouth for 40–50 years — and the flavour has never faded | Breakfast 06:00 till sold out; Lunch & Dinner 11:00–20:00 | Breakfast picks: Rice Milk Egg Crepe, Pork Bun, Rice Roll; Lunch/Dinner picks: Crispy Duck, Dumplings

Market Chou-Fu Bing

A locals-only must-eat and a Hengchun original — the chou-fu bing is a pan-fried flatbread stuffed with cabbage, Thai basil, carrot, egg, and more, served with house pickled radish for a flavour you simply won't find anywhere else. If you're extra hungry, the braised pork rice with miso soup is a solid choice too

Grandma's Savory Rice Cake

At the corner of Zhongshan Rd and Fude Rd sits a cluster of decades-old savory rice cake shops — this is just one of them, and every single one is delicious. The nearby Wu Mama's Savory Rice Cake has no Google Maps listing but is equally worth trying. Drizzle on the house garlic soy sauce and it tastes just like grandma's

Renhua Breakfast Shop

A humble-looking traditional breakfast shop that is quietly the best in Hengchun — locals have been coming here since childhood for the gua bao and fried dough sticks, which have no equal in town

BoBo Chicken Breakfast

Open 05:00–13:00; A neighbourhood breakfast shop with a huge mix of Eastern & Western options | Must try: Pork Fillet Egg Crepe

🍳Brunch
Mini Orange Brunch

A lovely spot for a leisurely brunch beside the ancient city wall. The wall across the road was built during the Qing Dynasty and still bears bullet holes from WWII American air raids — a landmark with remarkable layers of history | Must try: French Thick Toast, Signature Cheese Egg Roll, Classic French Platter

Mountain Home Kitchen

Huoji Duck Vermicelli

A long-standing duck vermicelli institution in Hengchun. The chili oil is fiery but addictive — dip the glass noodles in it for a truly satisfying bite

Hengchun Steamed Meatball King

Traditional Pingtung-style steamed meatballs — larger than the Pingtung City variety, with a wonderfully simple menu. Pair them with four-herb pork soup for the taste of home that Hengchun locals abroad truly miss

Country Duck Vermicelli

Flavour rivals Huoji — the braised items are excellent and duck tongue is a must-order. Located right next to the Hengchun Sunday night market, perfect for a post-dinner stroll
